PROOFREADING & COPY EDITING

EDITING ON A TECHNICAL LEVEL

Proofreading focuses on combing through your writing word-by-word to achieve grammatical and typographical perfection. Lena focuses on flagging and correcting spelling errors, punctuation problems, internal inconsistencies, and text and formatting issues. This style of editing is all about getting your piece to look flawless. Proofreading and copy editing is recommended for near-finished projects that need a fine-toothed comb.

LINE EDITING

EDITING LANGUAGE AND STYLE

Along with basic proofreading, line editing focuses on the way you use language to convey meaning to your audience.  Is your language clear, fluid, and pleasurable to read? Do the words you've chosen convey a specific and precise meaning, or are they generalized, cliche, or unclear? As a line editor, Lena will draw your attention to issues like redundancy, overused phrases, run-on sentences, unnatural wording, tonal shifts, transitions, and digressions; for works of fiction, aspects like point-of-view, tense, diction, syntax, and pacing are examined and fine-tuned. This rigorous editing method focuses on enhancing and clarifying the meaning of your project, as well as refining its language to the best that it can be.

DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING

PROOFREADING, LINE EDITING, AND THEN SOME

Developmental editing includes providing detailed feedback on the content of your work, helping you shape ideas, concepts, themes, and narratives. This is the "workshopping" of your piece - whether it's a fiction manuscript, an essay, or a marketing pitch - and your opportunity to receive input from an experienced writer on how your project works conceptually. Developmental editing can be anything from providing comments and suggestions on how to improve the existing work to collecting newly-formed ideas into a guiding outline. This option is best for writers seeking substantive, content-focused comments on their work, or for those who have a starting point but need guidance for the project the rest of the way.
